LOFT Vacuum Evaporators in Comparison to Chemical-Physical Processes

The operating costs of a chemical-physical procesing unit are normally substantially higher than those of an evaporator unit. Also in many cases reduction of pollutant contents to permissible levels for municipal sewer disposal is extremely difficult or cost intensive with C/P treatment units. Costly certification procedures and regular checks and inspections by authorities are also required . Wastewaters treated by chemical-physical procedures are not suited for use in recycling and must be disposed of in the sewer system.

This case study describes a unit supplied and the relevant factors for the application.

Economic evaluation for LOFT evaporator for treatment of wastewaters from aluminium pretreatment (degreasing,

surface etching) as compared to chemical-physical processing at a rate of 250 l/h,
i.e. 1440 m³/year.

A cooling aggregate manufacturer using chemical-physical wastewater treatment was looking for improved methods of wastewater processing. When his existing unit was in need of renovation, the manufacturer carried out a cost-utility analysis and decided to retool with a newly purchased DESTIMAT® LE 250.

Analysing his application and pretreatment process and wastewater system in a holistic manner resulted in reduction of the manufacturer’s water replenishment requirements from 12,100 m³/year to 280 m³/year.

With the new system the manufacturer not only achieved considerable savings but also was able to make a substantial contribution to environmental protection.

This was due to a variety of factors including water recovery via the evaporator, optimization of the pretreatment units and improved purification by specific water quality parameters including lower required temperatures and extremely low conductivity, etc

The investment costs for the customer for the evaporator, the required peripheral equipment and the sdtart-up costs amounted to approx. € 120,000.

The new unit paid for itself (compared to the costs of chemical-physical treatment) in only approx. 20 months!
